HEVY is the third instalment of a process-based collaborative framework where the participating artists meet and exchange ideas on a regular basis. Previously the artists worked together to produce Doubt at Conical in 2006 and Polar at Margaret Lawrence Gallery in 2007.

HEVY brings these artists together again to explore notions of weight as an enabling (or disabling) agent within the production of meaning. Weight in this instance is not limited to a physical manifestation of an object’s mass but rather evokes the full gamut of conceptual possibilities. An idea of weight has been identified as an integral part of each participating artist’s practice. This exhibition aims to use this commonality to extend a dialogue between the conceptual concerns evident in each other’s work.

Simon Horsburgh: “I framed images and texts as ‘contributions’, i.e, Lani’s contribution was images x,y and z, text A, and she thanks such and such… I chose to describe them rather than title them for a couple of reasons, mostly because this project has for me, felt like a collective act – much more so than the others. I have felt that I’ve been making my work because that is what the show needs, like my piece of the puzzle, rather than ‘my’ work. Anyway, I just wanted to bundle everyone in as parts of a whole – like cooking a meal or something – Lou peeled the spuds, Kiron washed the lettuce, etc and we served up HEVY. Seems like everyone gets a fair chance to strut their stuff solo, but the HEVY crew is something a bit different. It’s different to a regular group show, so it seemed cool to package things a bit differently. So I was also thinking about how we refer to works when we’re meeting. You know, ‘building’ is over here, ‘tyre’ is there, where is ‘bird’ going?” 1
